What is the differences between Tags and Categories?
Well If you are a blogger or you are are a reader of blog, you must have noticed that a separate tags and categories are always associated with a posting.What is the maning of these terms and why do we use it in our posting.I tried to explain it with my experience.
Lets see Tags first:
Well tags are also called keywords which can be used to identify or locate posting within your blogs.These tags are also used within search engine to find exact information.The sites which uses tags are Del.icio.us, Technorati, and Flickr etc.
Within a blog tags are used… to find and interconnect various posting.The tag link takes you to a collection of posts tagged with that tag category name.
For example instead of going to search engine and typing keyword like webmaster tool, you can directly go to tag cloud of a particular blog and click on a tag to get a list of posting which is classified and linked to that tags.
Tags on your site can have two functions.
- Tags can link to related tag categories on socila bookmarking site or other tag sites, showing a collection of offline posts from around the web all related to the tag category, such as webmaster tools.
- Tags can link to a generated page such as your searchs do, listing all of the posts on your site related to that specific tag.
Tags can be linked from within the text, via a list at the bottom of your post, in a list in your sidebar or elsewhere on your site, or within a Tag Cloud . You can see examples of tag clouds and post lists of tags on this site too, chk out tag clous at right side. It will take you to another page on my site that lists posts related to that tag.
Lets talk about Categories:
Well yes categories are not tags but they do same things.In the right hand side of this blog you can see a list box named categories which contains a different set of subject I talked about.some of the examples include Article marketing,blogging,internet,keyword tool etc.
If you are interested in viewing information on Earn money, you would click on that category and a collection of the posts I’ve written on news about Earning money online is displayed. This isn’t much different from tags, but categories are built into the core of my blog. They are set by me and for me to use, allowing me to group my content under a specific umbrella category.So basically tags are more specific to post ,other side categories are common to different posting.
So Which one to use?
- Categories must have unique name and should not be repeated,tags can be repeated in various posts
- Categories name can be long words,tags name must be short maximum 1-3 words
- Clicking on both tags and categories generate a list of post with relevant word
- Categories and superset of tags.A category can not be tags whereas a tag can be category.
- Categories don’t help search engine to find your post, whereas tags helps search engine to locate post with searching words.
- Posts are usually in one to four categories. A single post can list as many tags as you want.
- And most important Categories help visitors find related information on your site. Tags help visitors find related information on your site and on other sites.
Categories are Broader Views while Tags are not. Say for an example If you write something on Keeping Your PC secure. You put it under category Security.
Now lets tag it. You makes tags like pc,pc tips.
So while making tags be very cautious as it is text by which search engine will locate you on internet.Please share your views.
